F1 for Chennai, pledges Jayalalithaa
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday pledged full support for bringing Formula One racing to Chennai.
She gave the assurance when racing icon Narain Karthikeyan, the first ever Indian to feature in F1, called on her at the Secretariat, an official release said.
During the meeting, Karthikeyan explained all the features of F1 racing and the tremendous viewership the sport commanded.
He requested the Chief Minister to support the proposal to bring the sport to Chennai as the city was the "automobile capital of India" and should automatically be the choice.
Jayalalithaa told him that she had already written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for establishment of a motor racing circuit and an automobile testing facility here. She had also drawn the attention of the Prime Minister to the need to bring F1 racing to the city, the release said.
"The Chief Minister indicated that the proposal to establish a racing circuit will receive her full support", the release said.
During the meeting, Principal Secretary, Finance, N. Narayanan was also present.

Wat is the use in conducting such competitions in state like Tamil Nadu where food is a dream for most people.
Just because of the rapid growth in the Industrial sector doesnt mean we are all set for hosting these grand events. Wat do u think would be the turn over for these competitions???
TO make a special mention malaysia is much better and the best place to host these events and definetly not Tamil Nadu.
Thanks,
Sriram.

Karthik,
The source is given at the end of the article.
Sriram, I agree to wht u say..but we being the "Detroit of India" cannot afford to miss this chance. F1 coming to India is sure, why not in Chennai. This indirectly will boost the tourism industry in Tamilnadu, which indirectly is an income for the state.
Events like these gives Chennai a global presence (not only in software, but in all industries).

Sriram,
There are different perspectives to this. Agreed we still have a huge chunk of population below the poverty line, but that shouldn’t narrow down our vision.
F1 is a sport that can generate huge revenues. Consider this game as a huge investment that has guaranteed direct and indirect returns apart from just entertainment.
Growth of such sports gives an inadvertent growth of interdependent industries like Hotels, Aviation and tourism, and look at the revenue it will fetch and the number of jobs it will provide. By having an F1 track we can put our city in the world map and this would call for more investments.
